Yunlin County teenagers’ bodies pulled from river

By Rich Chang  /  Staff reporter

The bodies of two Yunlin County junior-high school students who allegedly committed suicide over the weekend by jumping into the Beigang River (北港溪) have been recovered.

Yunlin police said the body of a 15-year-old boy surnamed Lee (李) was found under the Yunchai Bridge (雲嘉大橋) on Monday evening, while the body of a 16-year-old girl, surnamed Chang (張), was found yesterday morning about 1km away from the bridge.

Both were students at Shuilin Junior High School.

Police say autopsies will be performed on the pair’s bodies.

According to the police, Chang called Lee on Saturday afternoon from her grandmother’s home and asked him to take her out.

Lee picked her up and that was the last time any family members saw the pair alive.

Their families reported the teens missing when they failed to return home.

Shuilin Junior High School principal Sun Ming-shan (孫明山) said the pair had been good friends, not boyfriend and girlfriend, although they appeared to have become very close over the past two to three weeks.

Chang was due to attend a Comprehensive Assessment Program for junior-high students this month, so her parents and teachers had urged her not to date Lee, but focus on studying, Sun said.

Yunlin County Commissioner Su Chih-feng (蘇治芬) has asked the school to file an internal review of the incident.

Su said that Sun will be removed as the school’s principal as a disciplinary measure.
