Hong Kong celebrities have spoken up through social media in support of protesters in Taiwan occupying the legislative chamber over the handling of the cross-strait service trade agreement.

Student-led protesters have occupied the Legislative Yuan since Tuesday last week in response to a plan by Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) legislators to push the controversial pact through the legislative process.

Among the Hong Kong celebrities offering support were actors Chapman To (杜汶澤) and Anthony Wong (黃秋生), and singer Denise Ho (何韻詩).

Ho said she spent two hours researching the issue before deciding to back the protesters. She called for the public to speak up and sent her own support to the students in the Legislative Yuan.

Wong on Tuesday said the students’ actions were worthy of respect and emulation.

“Whatever the result, you have done yourselves proud, but we all need to do more,” he said.

Meanwhile, To’s support for the movement has angered some of his Chinese fans, with some calling for him to not set foot in Beijing.

In response, To said: “If you can, stop me from coming to China.”

On Tuesday, Beijing Maite Media Co chief executive officer Chen Lizhi (陳礪志) announced that his company and its subsidiaries would not work with To.
