King installed as security chief

Former representative to the US King Pu-tsung (金溥聰) yesterday took office as the top national security adviser to President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九). King, widely seen as Ma’s closest aide, is the fourth person to be appointed secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC) since Ma took office in 2008. In 2009, King was appointed secretary-general of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), which is chaired by Ma. During the 2012 presidential election, King served as executive director of Ma’s campaign office, helping the president win re-election. King, 57, was deputy Taipei mayor from 2004 to 2006 under Ma and was named Taiwan’s representative to the US in December 2012. The US post is to be filled by Representative to the UK Shen Lyu-shun (沈呂巡).

Cities to share experiences

Directors of the World Design Capital project are to gather at the Taipei World Design Conference on Saturday to share how their different cities have improved citizens’ lives through design. Speakers include experts from Taiwan, South Korea, Italy, South Africa, Finland and France, who are to discuss how design drove urban renewal and tackled problems faced by their respective cities, according to the Taipei City Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs, the conference organizer. Taipei last year won its bid to be 2016 World Design Capital, the fifth city to earn the honor. Torino, Italy, was the first design capital in 2008, followed by Seoul in 2010, Helsinki in 2012 and Cape Town this year. Taipei hopes the designation will boost its tourism and international media exposure. The conference is to take place at Sinyi School, an educational arm of realty company Sinyi Group.
