The pristine beaches and mountains of Kenting (墾丁) and the convenience of Greater Kaohsiung have earned both a nod from leading hotel-booking site Agoda.com, which named the two spots among Asia’s “hottest emerging travel stops.”
Kenting placed second on Agoda’s fourth annual Asia’s Fresh Destinations list, while Kaohsiung came in fifth.
The Singapore-based Agoda praised Kenting — home to a national park and Taiwan’s most inviting beaches — for its weather and wealth of outdoor activities, including surfing, swimming, mountain climbing, hiking and camping. The annual Spring Scream music festival also earned a shout-out.
Agoda praised Greater Kaohsiung for its growing tourist scene driven by beautification projects and increasing air routes from nearby countries.
The city was listed in fifth place for its easy access to countryside and pleasant weather throughout the year, making it great for browsing museums, shopping at night markets or exploring by bicycle.
The top destination on this year’s list was Mandalay, Myanmar. Kenting came in second, followed by Okinawa, Japan; Lombok, Indonesia; Greater Kaohsiung; Kota Kinabulu, Malaysia; Osaka, Japan; Chiang Rai, Thailand; Perth, Australia; and Da Nang, Vietnam.
Agoda’s editorial team studied complex booking patterns, read through customer reviews and worked closely with its hotel teams to finalize the selections for the fresh destinations list.
The list represents places that have seen a boom in travelers, attracted large numbers of “expert travelers,” and offered “unfiltered travel experiences” despite being popular destinations, the Web site said.
