A young couple shopping at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi’s Xinyi Place in Taipei on Saturday were startled to suddenly find themselves in unexpected company when a rodent dropped in on them from the ceiling.
According to a report carried by the Chinese-language Apple Daily on Monday, the man, surnamed Mi (米), was window shopping with his girlfriend on the first basement level of the store’s A8 Hall in Xinyi District (信義) when he felt something hit his bag.
Mi was quoted as saying that his first thought was that a person had run into him, but then he looked down and saw the rat twitching on the floor next to him.
A saleswoman who witnessed the “incident” told Mi that the rat had fallen from the ceiling, the report said.
“The rat lay on the ground for about 10 minutes before department staff noticed it and covered it with a shoebox,” the report quoted Mi as saying.
The shopping center was later quoted as saying that the rodent could have climbed up from the food court on the second basement level through a ventilation pipe, adding that there was only one restaurant on the first level, the Ippudo TW.
It was not the first time that a rat has been spotted in the department store, according to the Apple Daily report.
Last month, a rodent scampered onto a table at the store’s A-Kuan Hot Pot restaurant, while in 2012, a rat that seemed as if it had been poisoned was spotted wandering around the food court of the shopping center’s A11 Hall.
