Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Wei Ming-ku (魏明谷) won the DPP’s primary after finishing first in a public opinion poll and is expected to be nominated as the party’s candidate in the Changhua County commissioner election next year, the DPP announced yesterday.
“Wei Ming-ku has won in an accumulated public opinion poll, which included surveys conducted by three companies. As per the agreement of all five aspirants prior to the poll, the numerical result will not be made public,” DPP Secretary-General Lin Hsi-yao (林錫耀) told a press conference.
The three surveys collected 3,880 valid samples in the county on Thursday night, Lin said.
The nomination is expected to be approved by the party’s Central Executive Committee in the coming weeks, Lin said.
Wei became the eighth DPP nominee in the mayoral and commissioner elections, scheduled to be held in December next year, joining Nantou County’s Lee Wen-chung (李文忠), Pingtung County’s Pan Men-an (潘孟安) and Yunlin County’s Lee Chin-yung (李進勇), as well as Greater Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu (陳菊), Greater Tainan Mayor William Lai (賴清德), Chiayi County Commissioner Helen Chang (張花冠) and Yilan County Commissioner Lin Tsung-hsien (林聰賢).
The DPP said it aims to win at least half of the 22 administrative zones holding elections next year.
Wei’s victory in the primary marked another successful campaign for the New Tide faction of the DPP, arguably the most powerful, former DPP legislator Julian Kuo (郭正亮) said.
Wei, Pan and Lee Wen-chung are all New Tide members, while Lee Chin-yung was backed by the faction during his campaign, Kuo added.
The Taipei Department of Health yesterday said it has launched a probe into a restaurant at Far Eastern Sogo Xinyi A13 Department Store after a customer died of suspected food poisoning. A preliminary investigation on Sunday found missing employee health status reports and unsanitary kitchen utensils at Polam Kopitiam (寶林茶室) in the department store’s basement food court, the department said.
