Taiwanese scooters a hit with riders in El Salvador

Staff writer, with CNA

Taiwan’s SYM scooters and motorcycles have become a common sight on the roads of El Salvador since the country began importing them last year, Taiwan’s embassy in San Salvador has said.

SYM scooters and motorcycles have enjoyed strong sales in Salvadorean company Grupo Humro’s 22 stores since it began importing the bikes in the middle of last year, the embassy said.

SYM products have become increasingly popular among consumers in the Central American country because of their fuel efficiency, high quality, safety and convenience, as well as the launch of successful advertising campaigns, according to the embassy.

Grupo Humro has opened a flagship store in the Santa Tecla municipality exclusively for SYM motorcycles and scooters, and has plans to import a shipping container of SYM’s Vespa models targeted at female consumers, the embassy said.

It added that Grupo Humro imports many products from Taiwan because of the superior quality of the automobiles, motorcycles, scooters and spare parts produced there, compared with those made in China, South Korea and Japan.

In addition, Taiwanese suppliers offer better delivery and other services, the embassy said.

Grupo Humbro has built trade relations with more than 10 Taiwanese suppliers over the past 15 years, according to the embassy.

The Salvadorean firm was established in 1989 and mainly sells imported motorcycles, scooters and spare parts. It posted turnover of US$12.5 million last year.
