Kinmen plans to attract more Chinese tourists

Staff writer, with CNA

Kinmen County is making an effort to attract more Chinese tourists, as the number of Chinese arriving by sea from Xiamen declined in the first eight months of the year.

As of the end of last month, about 210,000 Chinese tourists traveled from Xiamen by ferry, a decline of about 67,000 travelers from the same period last year.

Kinmen officials attributed the decline to the opening of a passenger liner service from southeast China to Taiwan proper and Beijing’s efforts to reduce spending on foreign travel by public officials.

The county government is planning to open bigger duty-free shops and shopping zones next year and offer discounted accommodation rates to visitors from Xiamen and other Chinese cities, Ho Kuei-chuan (何桂泉), a county tourism official, said yesterday.

The county will promote these travel incentives at a travel fair in Xiamen later this month, Ho said.

The central government is also concerned about the decline in visitor arrivals and has been working to increase tourism from China, Mainland Affairs Council official Kao Ming-tsun (高銘村) said.
