More than 100 creative and artistic events are being held across Taipei from now until Sept. 30 as part of the city’s efforts to be designated World Design Capital in 2016.

The 2013 Meet Taipei Design initiative was launched on Thursday last week and includes workshops, lectures, exhibitions, performances and other creative events at more than 100 venues, including studios, coffee shops and schools, the Taipei City Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs said.

The department launched a series of activities last year to bring Taipei closer to its goal of being designated the world’s design capital, department commissioner Liu Wei-gong (劉維公) said on Sunday.

“We hope the series will enable more Taipei residents and visitors to the city to fully experience the talent of local designers,” Liu said.

Lee Mei of the improvisation dance troupe Ku & Dancers (古舞團) said the troupe will hold workshops next month to teach the public about contact improvisation dance and invite people to join its performances.

“This type of dance aims to bridge the distance between individuals,” Lee said, adding that it teaches people how to relax and bond with their environment.

In addition, a group of people carrying balloons on scooters will hit the streets each week to cheer up fellow commuters who have the “Monday blues.”

Visitors and residents will also be treated to several emoticon installations that an illustrator will set up in different streets and alleys to encourage people to communicate with the city, the organizers said.

An artistic team also plans to up an archeology exhibit near the Yuanshan Site to give the public the opportunity to experience the process of excavating a historical location.

The events have drawn the participation of close to 200 shops, studios, schools and groups.

The World Design Capital designation will be announced on Nov. 12.
