Taipei one of the world’s best food sites, blogger says

Taipei has been rated as one of the 10 best food destinations in the world by the US food blogging Web site Bunkycooks this week, earning rave reviews for an abundance of tasty street food.

Bunkycooks.com blogger Gwen Pratesi wrote on Monday that Taipei is one of the world’s “top ten places that consistently excite the senses and the palate.”

Also on Pratesi’s top 10 list are Barcelona, south of France, Italy, Mexico City, Morocco, London, New Orleans, New York City and Charleston, South Carolina.

Taipei residents, food proprietors and government officials might feel proud and happy over the distinction and free publicity — but probably not the city’s much-touted gourmet restaurants and star-rated dining establishments — as Pratesi focused on street fare favored by the masses and budget-conscious.

In particular, guabao (刈包) tickled her palate, she said.

“Gua Bao is one of the most popular street foods in Taipei that has made its way to the United States via many well-known chefs. If you think this braised pork belly on a steamed bun with pickled mustard greens, cilantro, and chopped peanuts is tasty here, just wait until you try it late night on the streets of Taipei,” she wrote.

“With influences from China and Taiwan, [Taipei street food] seasonings include taste bud tantalizing Taiwanese basil, white pepper, cilantro, pickled vegetables, and star anise.”

Bunkycooks.com was started in 2009, with Pratesi listing finding the “best in culinary adventures” as her goal as she travels around the globe in search of good food.

As Pratesi says on her Web site: “While we travel great distances to enjoy unique food, wine, and spirits, it is also important to be educated about the region and its people, learn about the history and architecture, and have time to take in the scenery and the surroundings. Those things have as much impact on the food experience as does the food itself.”
