Thirteen of the 21 hotels inspected in a nationwide examination of food sanitation failed to make the grade, the Consumer Protection Committee said yesterday, with the worst offenders in Taoyuan County where hotels were found with over 38 counts of expired foodstuffs.

Well-known establishments such as South Garden Hotels and Resorts, the Monarch Skyline International hotel and the Taoyuan Hotel were among those found by the Taoyuan County Government Public Health Bureau with violations on expired foodstuffs, along with not separating cold and hot foods, inadequate refrigeration temperatures or not meeting fire safety regulations.

Multiple hotel kitchens were found with expired condiments and sauces, a total of 11 counts, the bureau said.

Officials demanded the immediate destruction of all expired condiments and sauces on site, as well as slapping the hotels with a NT$60,000 fine for violating the Act Governing Food Sanitation (食品衛生管理法).

The bureau called for stricter compliance with sanitation regulations by the food and beverage industry, adding that owners should periodically inventory their stocks and check expiration dates.

It said it would be stepping up inspections and warned establishments that have already been fined to improve sanitation.

Meanwhile, with the advent of summer, the bureau has also launched its first wave of inspections of cold drink and bubble-tea shops.

Establishments that have already been found with high bacterial counts in their ice supplies have been put on notice to improve, the bureau said, adding that a second wave of inspections would be launched soon.
