US rock band Aerosmith will perform in Taiwan for the first time ever at a festival in Greater Kaohsiung on Aug. 24, festival organizers announced yesterday.

The band is to perform at the Rock Sonic Day in Kaohsiung at the Kaohsiung National Stadium, which has a capacity of about 55,000, organizers the Very Aspect Culture Group said.

At a press conference in Taipei, Greater Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu (陳菊), who said she has been listening to Aerosmith since she was young, called the band’s visit “a big thing” and invited everyone across the nation to visit the city for the concert.

Kaohsiung’s MRT system will operate until 3am on Aug. 25 and city buses will also provide shuttle services, Chen added.

Taiwanese rocker Wu Bai (伍佰), who will also perform at the festival with his group China Blue, said that since Aerosmith’s music epitomizes US culture, his group would sing only Taiwanese songs to do musical “battle with Aerosmith.”

Taiwanese Aboriginal reggae-rock band Matzka, local bands Fire EX, Go Chic, 88balaz, Trash and Guntzepaula, and a Japanese band whose name will soon be announced, will also perform at the concert, organizers said.

Tickets will go on sale on Sunday next week, with prices ranging between NT$1,000 and NT$8,800.

Meanwhile, Chen said the Greater Kaohsiung Government was building a popular music center that may be completed in 2015.
