Nantou features as one of top 10 new Asian destinations

Nantou County has been selected as one of the top 10 new destinations in Asia by an editorial team at the online hotel booking site

Nantou was selected for having the “tallest” drawcard in the nation — Yushan (玉山), also known as Jade Mountain — as well as Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) and diverse geographical features such as hot springs, rivers and seemingly unending mountains, said.

The Web site said the best time to visit Nantou was between October and January. It suggested that tourists avoid visiting the area during national holidays due to overcrowding.

The list was compiled by an editorial team at, who studied booking patterns, read thousands of customer reviews and spoke with local experts.

The top 10 new hotspots also include Indonesia’s Tana Toraja; Ella in Sri Lanka; Ipoh, Malaysia; Hakone, Japan; and Phonsavan in Laos. chief executive Rob Rosenstein said these cities have drawn a huge number of tourists from around the world as they undergo rapid development.

He said all the cities meet tourists’ needs in food, culture, sports, entertainment and shopping, and they are less crowded than more well-known tourist attractions.
