President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) yesterday called for local governments to take flood prevention measures after the Central Weather Bureau forecast heavy to torrential rain for the country this week.
The president made the call after he visited the Central Disaster Emergency Operation Center to oversee government flood-prevention work after canceling plans to travel south to mark the anniversary of his first and second inaugurations.
He was originally scheduled to visit National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, where he was scheduled to have an international press conference.
He was also expected to visit Yunlin Education and Nursing Institute and a wind power plant in Changhua County.
The bureau said the nation’s center and south must prepare for torrential downpours over the next two days, while western and northeastern regions were also expected to experience heavy rainfall.
The rain is very likely to cause rockfalls, flooding and mudslides, the bureau said.
