Wet weather set to continue amid cold fronts, cloud band

Staff writer, with CNA

Rainy weather could persist throughout the week in most areas around the nation due to cold fronts and a rain-bearing cloud band in southern China, the Central Weather Bureau said yesterday.

Heavy rain is expected to continue nationwide today, with torrential rain hitting mountainous areas in the north, as a cold front that arrived on Friday continues to affect the country, the bureau said.

The bureau cautioned people throughout the nation to be aware of sudden downpours, lightning, strong winds, mudslides, rising river waters and flooding in low-lying areas.

The Shihmen Reservoir (石門水庫) in Taoyuan County had recorded 53mm of rainfall as of 5pm on Saturday, the highest rainfall for a single day so far this year.

Several factories at the Gueishan Industrial Park in Taoyuan and the freeway exit ramp at Nankan in the county were also flooded on Saturday. However, the flood waters have since receded, officials said.

Meanwhile, the Ming-te Reservoir (明德水庫) in Miaoli County has been releasing water since Saturday to control water levels, the Water Resources Agency said.

Between tomorrow and Friday, northern, eastern and mountainous areas could see intermittent rain due to the influence of the rain-bearing cloud band in southern China, the bureau said.

The arrival of another front on Saturday is also expected to bring intermittent rain to the country, it added.

Meanwhile, temperatures yesterday reached 25°C in northern, northeastern and eastern areas, and were between 28°C and 29°C in central, southern and southeastern parts, the bureau said.
