President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) daughter Lesley Ma (馬唯中), was tight-lipped yesterday about reports that she had held her wedding banquet on Saturday night in Taipei, maintaining a low profile as she left for Hong Kong.
The 33-year-old Lesley, the president’s eldest daughter, has lived in the US and worked at Chinese artist Cai Guoqiang’s (蔡國強) art studio in New York.
According to CtiTV, she got married last year in California to a former schoolmate from Harvard University, and held a small wedding banquet at the Grand Hotel in Taipei on Saturday night with family and friends.
First lady Chow Mei-ching (周美青) and Lesley’s sister, Kelly (馬元中), attended the banquet.
The president did not attend the event, the TV station said.
Lesley Ma and Kelly Ma showed up at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport around noon yesterday to take a flight to Hong Kong.
Lesley reportedly intends to live in Hong Kong with her husband.
Presidential Office spokesperson Lee Chia-fei (李佳霏) said that Lesley Ma was attending a private gathering with classmates in Taipei, and refused to comment further.
Chow and the two first daughters have maintained extremely low profiles since Ma Ying-jeou entered politics.
Lesley Ma, who was born in the US, chose to attend Harvard University after graduating from high school in 1998.
The president declined to comment on the report.
