Greater Tainan will offer a series of artistic and cultural events over the Lunar New Year holiday, the city’s Cultural Affairs Bureau said.
A drumming festival, which opens today and runs through Saturday at the city’s Eternal Golden Castle (億載金城), will feature seven percussion groups from Taiwan, the US, France, South Korea and Japan, the bureau said, including the Taiwanese Grammy-nominated Ten Drum Art Percussion Group (十鼓擊樂團), Japan’s Nobushi and the Pan’a Paname Steel Band from France.
A 40-minute 3D sound and light show will be staged in the square in front of City Hall tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday at 7pm and 8:30pm.
The projections will include a mixture of Tainan’s landscapes, nature, traditions and culture, accompanied by a live jazz performance.
The show, produced by artistic director Serina Chen (陳琪), producer of Image in Motion, Spanish visual artist Franc Aleu and visual director Yau Chen (陳瑤), will use projection mapping techniques to project images onto the walls of City Hall, creating images that will be 100m wide and 60m tall.
On Feb. 24, the annual Yanshui Beehive Fireworks (鹽水蜂炮) festival will feature a 22m Taoist divinity that will be used as the launch pad for thousands of rockets and firecrackers.
The festival will combine traditional fireworks displays with LED lighting effects, the bureau said.
Art exhibitions, cultural and creative activities, dance, music and drama performances by local groups will also be staged throughout the city to usher in the Year of the Snake.
The bureau is urging festivalgoers to use public transportation to help avoid traffic jams.
