The International Taoist Academic Foundation has come up with suggestions for people who want to decorate their houses with auspicious items for the Lunar New Year, which is the Year of the Water Snake.

“It is advisable to put on some ornaments with snake designs in them, and also yellow flowers in the house,” said Lin Chun-kuan (林俊寬), executive director of the foundation. “These are helpful ways to start the year on the right track to attract some good luck.”

“For those looking to attract fortune in the Year of the Water Snake, they could put up decorations with a flowing water theme or install an aquarium with fish in it,” he said.

Elements to attract good fortune this year are plants and flowers, with the color yellow the most auspicious, followed by red and white, he said.

For potted plants, people should buy moth orchids, tulips and other yellow-colored flowers, he said. Other good luck items include yellow gemstones and pictures of qilin (麒麟, a mythical creature in Chinese folklores), he said, and such decorations should be placed in a central spot.

People hoping for business prosperity can display decorations with actual water flowing in them, he said. For people looking for romance or wanting to get married, Lin said there are differences between the characteristics of water snakes and land snakes.

“A land snake [year] is good for ‘close-proximity’ romance [among friends and work colleagues], but we are in the reign of the water snake, which is prone to wandering and traveling around,” he said.

Singles looking should travel and take trips abroad.

Decorations and ornaments with snake-pattern, snake symbolism or serpentine designs are good for good-luck charms, he said.
