As this year’s Lunar New Year coincides with Valentine’s Day on Thursday, florists and a movie promoter have predicted that the holiday will be filled with romantic movies and flowers.

Chen Ken-wang (陳根旺), head of the planning division at Taipei Flowers Auction Co, said that this year’s rose supply is similar to last year’s, but prices will be 10 percent to 20 percent lower because of a larger demand for Lunar New Year flowers.

Chen also suggested early-bird purchasing for roses, as many flower shops will be closed during the Lunar New Year holiday from today until Sunday next week.

The Jianguo Flower Market in Taipei will be open until about 4pm today, he said.

For people considering filling their holiday with romantic movies, Valentine’s Day-themed movies are being aired at the Kaohsiung Film Archive from Wednesday until Feb. 24.

Four foreign films — Cafe de Flore, Journal de France, Beyond the Walls and Another Woman’s Life — will be aired five times per day by the city’s movie promoter at its venue overlooking the Love River (愛河).

Cafe de Flore is a French Canadian film that tells a love story between a man and a woman, and another between a mother and her son who has Down syndrome.

Journal de France is a documentary film that gives an introduction into the work and life of Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist and documentary maker Raymond Depardon.

The film follows Depardon as he travels and photographs his native land. It is dotted with footage and clips from his more than four decades of work.

Starring in Another Woman’s Life, an adaptation of the popular French novel La Vie d’une Autre (The Life of Another), is Oscar-winning actress Juliette Binoche and French actor and director Mathieu Kassovitz.

The two take audiences on a stroll through the romantic capital of France.

The film-promotion body also put in some thought for the gay community as it has included Beyond the Walls in its lineup of films.

The film tells the love story of a young pianist and a double-bass player from Albania.
