Organizers of the Swinging Skirts 2012 World Ladies Masters yesterday donated NT$10 million (US$344,000) to five local charities and urged the public to do good deeds to celebrate Christmas.

“In addition to establishing a world-class golf tournament in Taiwan, we’d like to give back to society,” Swinging Skirts chairman Johnson Wang told a press conference.

The Alliance Cultural Foundation, the Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation, the Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged, the United Way of Taiwan and the Cathay Charity Foundation will each receive NT$2 million.

In an attempt to foster young golfers in Taiwan, Wang, on behalf of the golf group, also donated NT$2 million to the Swinging Skirts Junior Golf Foundation.

Teresa Lu (盧曉晴) of Taiwan placed No. 2 in the second Swinging Skirts tourney on Dec. 9 after losing to South Korea’s Yeon Choi on the second hole of a playoff.

Yani Tseng (曾雅妮) failed to defend her title due to shoulder and elbow injuries.

Launched last year, the tournament has become an official leg of both the Taiwan Ladies Professional Golf Association and the Korea Ladies Professional Golf Tour.

Swinging Skirts is a private organization made up of both men and women amateur golfers. Its members wear skirts or kilts when they play, and all competitors, caddies and course referees are expected to do the same during the tournament.
