Envoy to Israel praises president’s diplomacy efforts

By Jason Pan  /  Staff writer, with CNA

Taiwan’s representative in Israel, Chang Liang-jen (張良任), praised the flexible diplomacy espoused by President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) in an opinion piece for an Israeli newspaper, saying it had attained good results and become a model for the international community.

Chang’s piece was published in Haaretz under the title “Lessons in diplomatic coexistence: Taiwan’s relations with China.”

Haaretz is the only news media in Israel publishing in both Hebrew and English, and is the country’s largest newspaper.

In his piece, Chang pointed to the US granting Taiwan visa-waiver status as proof that Ma’s flexible diplomacy was bearing fruit.

He wrote that Ma announced his flexible diplomacy policy four-and-a-half years ago in his first inauguration speech to improve relationship with China, bring a ceasefire on the diplomatic front, promote pragmatic links to countries without official relations with Taiwan and develop multilateralism by participating in regional integration and cooperation with Taiwan’s Asia-Pacific and Southeast Asia neighbors.

Chang said Taiwan wishes to participate in two UN organizations: the International Civil Aviation Organization and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, to make contributions to the international community.

He also mentioned that Ma had announced the East China Sea Peace Initiative on Aug. 5, whereby all countries would be encouraged to shelve controversies regarding disputed islands through consultations, avoid hostile confrontations and resolve disputes through peaceful means, and to establish a platform to examine the feasibility of jointly exploring and developing resources in the East China Sea.

Chang said that initiative had received positive responses.
