EPA launches Web-based pollution inquiry system

By Lee I-chia  /  Staff reporter

The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) yesterday announced that it has set up a Web-based pollution information system that gives the public access basic information on emissions of registered pollutant sources.

The establishment of the information inquiry system, prtr.epa.gov.tw, is based on the principle of open government information and the public’s right to know, the EPA’s Department of Environmental Monitoring and Information said.

The system has integrated information on air pollutant emissions, waste water discharges, waste disposal and the manufacturing or import of toxic substances from various databases that were previously managed by different departments, the EPA said.

In order to increase the beneficial effects of information usage, the EPA plans to link the information on registered pollutants and their environment with a geographic information system so that people can easily check on the comprehensive quality of the environment — including air and water monitoring data collected near their homes.

However, the EPA said because the data formats from various departments were recorded using different regulations, it would have taken too much manpower to check the quality of the integrated information in the initial stages, so in order to improve the accuracy and quality of the new information system it has set up a feedback mechanism for the public to highlight any possible incorrect information found on the Web site.
