Greater Taichung park puts food waste to good use

By Lee I-chia  /  Staff reporter

About 210 tonnes of food waste are collected in Greater Taichung each day, of which 30 tonnes are made into fertilizers and 180 tonnes into pig feed, a Greater Taichung official said.

The local government held a food waste recycling promotional event yesterday in celebration of the third anniversary of Greater Taichung’s food waste recycling park, and also in an effort to educate visitors about how recycled food can be used for a variety of purposes.

Taichung Deputy Mayor Tsai Ping-kun (蔡炳坤) said the park, established in 2009, was the first of its kind in the country. The park provides an additional educational function by giving schools, institutions and communities the opportunity to learn about food waste treatment methods.

Although the park covers only 0.5 hectares, about 8 tonnes of leftover food waste are sent to it to be processed every day, he said. Some of the recycled food is made into chicken feed for chickens raised in the park’s farm, who stand as living proof of how waste can be productively used to achieve “zero waste,” Tsai added.

According to the city government’s Environmental Protection Bureau, on each Saturday morning this month, the park will organize hands-on events for members of the public who are interested in learning home gardening tips and how food waste can be made into organic fertilizers.
