High-speed rail offering travellers special rates

By Lee I-chia  /  Staff reporter

Starting next month, groups of passengers purchasing more than 30 tickets for designated trains on Mondays and Thursdays can benefit from a 35 percent discount, the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp (THSRC) has announced.

The company said the reduced price for group purchases is limited to standard class, reserved seats only while tickets for children, elderly people and disabled people enjoy further discounts worth up to 60 percent.

However, the rail authority said that the number of children’s tickets cannot exceed half of the total number of people in the group for the group purchase deal, adding that passengers who purchase 60 percent reduced price tickets must bring identification documents to qualify for the reduction.

Another requirement is that everyone in the group purchase discount must get on and off at the same stations. Tickets between Taipei and New Taipei City’s (新北市) Banciao (板橋) station are not included in the discount plan, the THSRC said.

There are 176 designated trains available for the group discount, including northbound and southbound trains departing from Taipei Station or Kaohsiung’s Zuoying Station (左營) running from 9am to 11am and from 7pm to 11pm.

The discount prices will be available from Aug. 1 to Dec. 27 this year, but purchases must be preordered in advance by fax, THSRC said.

The discount group tickets can be refunded with a handling fee of NT$20 for each ticket, but must be returned three days before the departure date, it added.
