The 30th biannual meeting of Academia Sinica’s academicians will take place this week, with nearly 200 academicians set to attend.
The opening ceremony is to be held this morning with an administrative report and seminar being delivered by academician Liu Chao-han (劉兆漢), followed by divisional reviews on the election of academy members and a symposium with speeches by Chi Tsung (季淳), a professor of politics at Occidental College in Los Angeles, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co chairman Morris Chang (張忠謀).
More seminars will be held on the second day of the meeting, covering topics such as national environmental and food safety; agricultural technology development and policies; and higher education and technology policies.
New inductees of the Academia Sinica — the nation’s highest academic body — will be decided by a vote on the last day of the conference on Thursday. Seventy-seven academics have been nominated and 45 among them will be selected according to reviews.
Being an academician is the highest, tenured honorary academic title in the country. The title is awarded to scholars who have made outstanding academic contributions.
A maximum of 10 academicians will be elected for each of the three divisions — math and physical sciences, life sciences and humanities and social sciences.
