A young couple was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison by the Taiwan High Court yesterday for causing the death through neglect of their one-year-old daughter last year.
The Taiwan High Court ruled that the couple, in their 20s, had abandoned their daughter.
The parents, surnamed Wang (王), were engrossed in online games and neglected their baby, who died from malnutrition and dehydration on Feb. 23 last year, the court said.
The court found that the infant, who was born premature in February 2010, weighed less than 4kg at one year old because she was underfed.
In their defense, the couple said they had not deliberately neglected the baby, but simply did not know enough about child care.
Both parents claimed that they suffered from mild mental retardation and the husband, the sole breadwinner, was earning less than NT$10,000 (US$330) per month.
They said it was difficult for them to care for a baby on the money they earned.
