Banciao prosecutors yesterday sought a 30-year sentence for a man accused of raping his granddaughter, who gave birth to a baby last month.
The first-grade junior-high school student gave birth at her school in New Taipei City (新北市) on April 25, where her teachers and classmates had been unaware she was pregnant because she had worn bigger clothes. As the girl was aged under 14, prosecutors launched an investigation into the case.
The girl would not tell investigators who had fathered the baby, but said she had been raped by members of her family, prosecutors said.
Three days after the girl gave birth, one of her uncles committed suicide by jumping into the Dahan River (大漢溪) and her grandfather unsuccessfully tried to kill himself by drinking pesticide.
Prosecutors said the girl alleged her 66-year-old grandfather had raped her on three occasions at her home. Investigators used DNA samples to determine that he was the baby’s father.
The Bancao District Court ordered the detention of the grandfather, who denies sexually assaulting his grandchild.
