The Linyuan police department in Greater Kaohsiung yesterday announced it had cracked a drug ring in Daliao District (大寮), arresting five men and seizing a handgrenade and a modified handgun.
Linyuan police received a tip-off about the ring, which was reportedly led by a man surnamed Hung (洪) and focused on Fongshan District (鳳山) and Daliao as the main area of its operations.
Police forwarded the information to the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors’ Office, where a special taskforce was charged with handling the case.
After days of tailing suspects, and determining the location of Hung’s hideout, police raided the premises and arrested the suspects.
Police said they seized a modified pistol with 11 rounds, one grenade, NT$800,000 in cash, an electronic scale and 16g of heroin and amphetamines.
“We did not know they had a grenade so it is a good thing we tackled Hung so quickly, otherwise things could have gotten messy,” a police officer who took part in the raid said.
Hung and the others were charged under the Act Governing the Control of Guns, Ammunition and Knives (槍砲彈藥刀械管制條例) and the Drug Control Act (毒品危害防制條例), police said.
A police spokesperson said the investigation to determine the source of the guns and drugs was ongoing.
