Wu Wang Hsia (吳王霞), the mother of former president Chen Shui-bian’s (陳水扁) wife, Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍), passed away yesterday at the age of 85.
A CNA report said Wu Wang Hsia’s body had been moved to a funeral home in Sinying district (新營), Greater Tainan.
Wu Wang Hsia’s family confirmed the news last night, saying she had passed away early on Saturday at the Sin-Lau Medical Foundation in Madou (麻豆), adding that Wu had been receiving medical care in hospital after she began feeling unwell a month ago.
The Democratic Progressive Party said the Wu family had tentatively chosen Jan. 10 as the final farewell gathering for Wu Wang Hsia.
Chen Chih-chung (陳致中), Wu Wang Hsia’s grandson, who is running as an independent candidate in the Greater Kaohsiung legislative election, said that prior to her passing away, Wu had been very concerned as to whether Chen Shui-bian would be released from prison. He added that he hoped the Ministry of Justice would allow his father to attend the funeral under humanitarian considerations.
The former president has reportedly already asked permission to attend the service.
The ministry last night said it would handle Chen Shui-bian’s request as quickly as possible.
