2012 ELECTIONS: CEC says PFP’s Lin cleared to run for vice presidency

By Loa Iok-sin  /  Staff Reporter, with CNA

The Central Election Commission yesterday confirmed the candidacy of the tickets fielded by the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the People First Party (PFP) for the Jan. 14 presidential election.

It also confirmed that PFP Chairman James Soong’s (宋楚瑜) running mate, Lin Ruey-shiung (林瑞雄), had officially renounced his US citizenship in September and was therefore qualified to run for the vice presidency.

None of the other presidential or vice presidential candidates — President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and Premier Wu Den-yih (吳敦義) of the KMT, Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and Su Jia-chyuan (蘇嘉全) and Soong — hold foreign citizenship, the commission said.

The Presidential and Vice Presidential Election and Recall Act (總統副總統選舉罷免法) says candidates must not hold dual nationality when they register to run.
