Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) last night announced plans to establish a “cross-strait dialogue task force” to encourage cross-strait communications if she wins next month’s presidential election.
“If the DPP wins the presidential election, we would establish a ‘cross-strait dialogue task force’ to increase mutual understanding and trust via several channels, as well as pave the road for formal cross-strait negotiations after coming into power,” she said at a press conference.
“The ‘Taiwan consensus’ [I advocate] is inclusive and if President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) is confident [in his idea of] ‘one China with different interpretations,’ it can also be included [for discussion] to diffuse domestic dissenting opinions and find a long-term and interactive basis for cross-strait relations,” she said.
Tsai said she proposed the “Taiwan is the Republic of China (ROC), the ROC is Taiwan” view to help ease tensions caused by national identity issues.
