Tsai to open national campaign headquarters today

By Lin Shu-hui  /  Staff Reporter

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairperson Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), the DPP’s presidential candidate, will today open her national campaign headquarters in Banciao (板橋), New Taipei City (新北市).

Following the opening of the headquarters, Tsai will devote five days to campaign activities in New Taipei City, her campaign team said, adding that the events will include visits to traditional markets, speeches at various temples and street processions with DPP legislative candidates.

Tsai’s campaign team said that New Taipei City has the most voters among the nation’s counties and cities. As the DPP’s New Taipei City mayoral candidate last year, Tsai garnered more than 1 million votes. The DPP believes that if it were not for the shooting that wounded former vice president Lien Chan’s (連戰) son Sean Lien (連勝文) at a campaign rally on the eve of the election, Tsai could have won the mayoral election.

Tsai’s campaign staff said Tsai, who recently concluded a 500km campaign trip that took her through 79 townships in 14 counties on the nation’s west coast over 11 days, plans to travel to Hualien and Taitung at the end of the month.

Visits to townships in Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli counties with concentrations of Hakka will be the campaign’s focus next month, Tsai’s campaign said.

Tsai is of Hakka descent. Sources said former Hakka Affairs Commission minister Yeh Chu-lan (葉菊蘭) has been recording some Hakka lessons for Tsai to use at Hakka campaign events.
