Starting on Saturday, the public will be able to use coupons and join discount package tours to explore Wulai District (烏來), New Taipei City (新北市), municipal officials said.

“In such hot summer weather, Wulai is a great attraction with its beautiful mountains, clear water and Aboriginal culture,” New Taipei City Deputy Mayor Hsu Chih-chien (許志堅) said. “It’s also a great place where people can relax.”

In addition to hot springs and local delicacies, Wulai is famous for its Atayal culture, including Aboriginal weaving and woodcarving, the city officials said.

Wang Chiu-yi (汪秋一), commissioner of the city’s Indigenous Peoples Bureau, said the one-to-two-day package tours his department organized “will show people some unbeaten routes and places.”

Among the highlighted areas are the Kalamoji Trail and Gorakadan Spring Resort.

“It will be a great opportunity to explore the mountainous area and experience the lifestyle there,” he said.

The original fees for the tours were between NT$2,000 and NT$3,000, but participants now only need to pay NT$888 for a day of events and NT$1,288 for two-day itineraries, the organizers said.

The city government will subsidize the costs. The discount tours are limited to a total of 1,000 people, while others can use coupons when buying souvenirs in the area, the organizers said.

The organizers encouraged those interested to register early to avoid disappointment. Wulai is the only Aboriginal area in the greater Taipei region.

Since 2009, the government has been using package tours to promote tourism to Wulai, but this year is the first time coupons have been offered to attract more people to the urban retreat.
