To 35-year-old Chang Shou-cheng (張守正), a baggage clerk with the Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA), nothing could have made him happier than picking up his bride on their wedding day in a customized train.

So he hired a special wedding train on Saturday to take him, his 32-year-old bride Fu Tzu-chi (符茲淇) and his in-laws from Fongyuan Station in Greater Taichung to Taipei, where the couple were married.

Hiring the special train rather than a luxury car as their wedding day ride was the life-long train aficionado’s special gift to his new bride.

“I wanted to make sure my other half had a very special memory of the day,” he said.

Chang said he and Fu met online. After talking online for six months, they decided to meet in person and arranged their first date at Songshan Railway Station, and since then, trains have been an important part of their relationship, perhaps too much, at times, Fu said.

“After he gets home from work he always plays with his model trains. Sometimes, it makes me really angry and I’ve told him he should marry a train instead,” Fu said.

However, Fu said the train journey they took on Saturday was “very special.”

Fongyuan Station Master Yeh Jen-ho (葉仁和) said the wedding train was the first to leave from Fongyuan in the 100 years the railway station has been open.

It cost NT$27,480 to rent the 104-seat special train for a one-way trip from Fongyuan to Songshan Railway Station in Taipei, Yeh said, the cost being calculated according to the number of seats and mileage.

Wedding trains are one of the TRA’s customized railway services, allowing people to book train trips for special occasions or needs, Yeh said.
