Lee DeWyze, winner of US TV show American Idol, said on Tuesday that Taiwanese TV shows are “crazy,” after he took part in one on the first day of his visit to the country.
Asked about the difference between US and Taiwanese variety shows, the star from the US talent show said: “Here, it’s just more crazy.”
DeWyze, who is in Taiwan on the third leg of his first Asian tour, said he was entertained by the casual and straightforward interviewing style of the hosts and guests on the TV show.
The singer and songwriter said he was also surprised when some guests, including local talent show winners Hawawa Yang (楊蒨時) and Evey Ai (艾怡良), showed photos of themselves looking plump at a younger age.
“It was fun. I got to meet some other artists and got to perform for everybody. So it was fun,” he said.
Asked if he could predict the winner of the current season of American Idol, DeWyze said it was a tough call.
“I don’t know — it could be anybody,” he said, adding that the four finalists are all very good.
As for the judges, DeWyze said: “I think they are a lot friendlier this year.”
The notoriously critical former judge Simon Cowell is “a tough guy, but at the end of the day he’s a nice guy off camera,” said DeWyze, who won the ninth season of American Idol last year.
“He just does his job and that’s what makes the show so successful,” he said.
DeWyze said it would be “cool” to meet Taiwanese talent show sensation Lin Yu-chun (林育群), whose rendition of Whitney Houston’s version of the Dolly Parton song I Will Always Love You became a viral hit on YouTube.
