Civil servants encouraged to retire early

Staff writer, with CNA

The government plans to implement a program next month to encourage more civil servants to take early retirement, the Central Personnel Administration said yesterday.

Under the program, those who choose to retire in June will receive a payment of up to seven months salary in addition to their pensions, said Chang Nien-chong (張念中), the administration’s chief secretary.

Those who retire in July will be eligible for an extra six months’ pay, while those who retire later will receive extra salary commensurate with the number of months early that they stop working, Chang said.

The plan is part of an effort to reduce employees from about 164,000 to 160,000 within five years.
