NX Theatre, a new group that combines magic tricks with other performing arts, will challenge itself by staging more than 100 shows in two months in Taipei.
Liu Chi-ling (劉季陵), a music composer who founded NX Theatre, said that over the past 10 years, he has spent more than NT$5 million (US$169,000) on large-scale props and equipment from Las Vegas, Nevada, in the hope of creating a new entertaining art form.
“Illusion is the highest form of magic. It’s about appearance, disappearance, incision, transformation and escape,” he added.
NX Theatre shows are not the type that focus on a single magician performing a dazzling array of magic tricks, he said.
Rather, each actor is trained to perform magic on stage, and to complement his or her performance with dance, singing and plenty of visual effects, he said.
One More Day With You (走向春天的下午), NX Theatre’s first presentation, was inspired by the work of Taiwanese illustrator Jimmy Liao (幾米).
It tells the story of a sentimental boy meeting a girl whose best friend has just passed away, Liu said.
Hung Hung (鴻鴻), director of the show, said Liao’s work is very popular among readers throughout the nation, but it is somewhat difficult to visualize on stage because of the artist’s surrealistic style.
Hung promised to give audiences a surprise every five to 10 minutes, saying the magic acts in the show are the best he has ever seen.
One More Day With You will star Faye (Chan Wen-ting, 詹雯婷), the lead vocalist in the local band “FIR”; Jack Yao (姚淳耀), who plays the main character in the movie Au Revoir Taipei (一頁台北); and indie pop singer--songwriter Peggy Hsu (許哲珮).
The shows will be held at Huashan Creative Park until Feb. 28.
