Soccer enthusiasts nationwide will be able to watch high-definition simulcasts of the 2010 World Cup’s opening ceremony and game from 8pm on Friday, Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) said yesterday.
On Friday, the simulcasts will be displayed at the pedestrian zone near the Vieshow Cinema in Taipei’s Xinyi District, as well as at the plazas in front of Taichung’s Sogo Department Store and Kaohsiung’s Dream Mall.
Apart from the opening game, CHT has chosen several other games to be broadcast outdoors live between Friday and July 11.
Chunghwa Telecom and the Taipei City Government will jointly organize the simulcast in Taipei, which is estimated to attract more than 1,000 people.
Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌) said the outdoor simulcast would be a good opportunity for families and friends to watch soccer games together.
“We have seen some real ‘classic’ scenes at the World Cup, including Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ goal and Zinedine Zidane’s head-butt,” Hau said. “I am sure we will be able to catch some more this year.”
Meanwhile, all the quarter-finals will also be aired outdoors at Mitsukoshi Plaza in Xinyi District (信義) on July 2 and July 3.
Delta Electronics has proposed holding a 3D broadcast of a game in Taipei, but it has yet to determine the date.
Aside from the outdoor simulcasts, Chunghwa Telecom chairman Lu Shyue-ching (呂學錦) said people would also be able to watch all 64 games on the company’s multimedia-on-demand (MOD) system. He said replays could also be seen four hours after the live broadcasts.

A group of Taiwanese-American and Tibetan-American students at Harvard University on Saturday disrupted Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng’s (謝鋒) speech at the school, accusing him of being responsible for numerous human rights violations. Four students — two Taiwanese Americans and two from Tibet — held up banners inside a conference hall where Xie was delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the Harvard Kennedy School China Conference 2024. In a video clip provided by the Coalition of Students Resisting the CCP (Chinese Communist Party), Taiwanese-American Cosette Wu (吳亭樺) and Tibetan-American Tsering Yangchen are seen holding banners that together read:

Heat advisories were in effect for nine administrative regions yesterday afternoon as warm southwesterly winds pushed temperatures above 38°C in parts of southern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. As of 3:30pm yesterday, Tainan’s Yujing District (玉井) had recorded the day’s highest temperature of 39.7°C, though the measurement will not be included in Taiwan’s official heat records since Yujing is an automatic rather than manually operated weather station, the CWA said. Highs recorded in other areas were 38.7°C in Kaohsiung’s Neimen District (內門), 38.2°C in Chiayi City and 38.1°C in Pingtung’s Sandimen Township (三地門), CWA data showed. The spell of scorching
