Taiwan and Japan yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the enhancement of exchanges and cooperation to further bilateral collaboration in 15 areas.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Deputy Spokesman James Chang (章計平) said it was the first time Taiwan and Japan had signed an MOU to enhance bilateral relations.
“Although Taiwan and Japan have been working together on many projects covered by the MOU, a comprehensive MOU like this could be used as a basis for both sides to come up with concrete projects to strengthen cooperation,” Chang said.
INTERCHANGE
The MOU was signed by the Interchange Association, which represents Japan in the absence of bilateral diplomatic relations, and the East Asia Relations Commission.
It includes bilateral exchanges in trade and commerce, tourism, academics, culture, technology, disaster prevention, environmental protection, maritime security, joint efforts to combat crime, agriculture and fishery, local government and the media.
WIDE
The East Asia Relations Commission said in a statement that the wide coverage of the MOU demonstrated the increasing and varied exchanges and cooperative relationships between Taiwan and Japan.
Chang said both sides would come up with projects throughout the year and review the implementation of the MOU at the end of the year.
ENVIRONMENT
In accordance with the MOU, both Taiwan and Japan should make efforts at energy conservation and the development of renewable energy, while enhancing cooperation in tackling climate change.
Taiwan and Japan will also cooperate to crack down on international criminality and smuggling.
