“Our [US] Congress actually changed [domestic] laws to make sure they are WTO consistent and compliant. It seems to me Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan is just the opposite,” she said.
The legislature amended the Act Governing Food Sanitation (食品衛生管理法) on Jan. 5, barring certain US beef products and effectively reversing the protocol Taiwan signed with Washington two months earlier.
By presenting the case before the WTO, the US would be able to “depoliticize” the issue, Glazer said.
Going through the WTO could be time-consuming, she said, but it would produce an outcome that is acceptable for both Taiwan and the US.
