Taipei celebrates Carfree Day today

By Mo Yan-chih  /  STAFF REPORTER

Taipei City will seal off the section of Zhongxiao E Road between Dunhua S Road and Fuxing S Road from 9:30am to 3:30pm today as part of its annual celebration of Carfree Day.

The event, organized by Taipei City's Department of Transportation, will begin with a cycling tour at 6:30am at the Meiti Riverside Park in Neihu District (內湖).

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌) will join participants for a ride from the riverside bike path to the busy Zhongxiao-Dunhua area.

The event will also feature a Green Transportation Exhibition at the Zhongxiao-Dunhua commercial district, starting at 9:30am, with an array of green transportation vehicles on display, including solar-powered vehicles and electric cars.

The department has invited choirs and community groups to perform on the main stage throughout the day. People can drop by the “games zone” to take part in various activities and quizzes on offer at the booths.

Participants who collect six stamps by successfully completing the challenges in the gaming zone can exchange them for T-shirts or limited edition EasyCards.

To encourage residents to take public transportation, the department will hold a sweepstakes for EasyCard holders. People can join the raffle by registering their EasyCard serial number at the activity Web site after taking 10 trips on the city's public transportation network (bus or MRT) by Sept. 22.

Information on Carfree Day activities is available on the department’s Chinese-language Web site at http://www.dot.taipei.gov.tw.
