NCC names TV shows that draw most complaints

FINED Two series were found by a content review panel to have violated regulations, leading the NCC to dole out fines to SET TV and Formosa TV

The National Communications Commission (NCC) yesterday released tallies of complaints by vexed TV viewers, saying most grievances between January and June concerned the series Wonderful Life (真情滿天下) on SET TV (三立電視) and Formosa TV’s (民視) prime time series Mom’s House (娘家).

Wonderful Life received 52 complaints, whereas Mom’s House attracted 31.

The shows were followed by complaints about a Vibo Telecom (威寶電信) commercial in which a student on his way to take an exam gets a ride with police.

The NCC has set up a system allowing viewers to complain about programs and ads on radio, TV or the Internet, but most complaints concern TV.

In the first half of the year, the NCC received 1,043 complaints, with 854 concerning TV.

The NCC said viewers complained that SET’s prime time series Wonderful Life was filled with murders, kidnappings and other crimes. Some complaints concerned foul language, with some viewers saying the show set a bad example for children.

Mom’s House drew similar complaints.

“The plot generally revolves around gangster fights, adultery and illegal acquisition of personal property,” the report said. “It also showed a scene in which a character is raped as a way to increase ratings.”

Both TV series were found by an independent content review panel organized by the NCC to have violated communication regulations. The NCC fined SET TV and Formosa TV NT$600,000 and NT$450,000 respectively.

The review panel will soon meet again to discuss other complaints filed against both series.
