TRA unveils new schedule

By Shelley Shan  /  STAFF REPORTER

Starting on June 16, the Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) will begin operating a new train schedule.

The TRA said that approximately 500 regular train services would be affected by the changes, with the majority of them being commuter trains operating during the rush hour period.

TRA deputy director-general Chang Ying-huei (張應輝) said the new train schedule would shorten the traveling time for commuter trains operating in metropolitan areas along the west coast.

The estimated travel time for commuter trains running between Taipei and Keelung will drop from 55 minutes to 44 minutes. Trips between Hsinchu and Taipei will take 86 minutes, about 14 minutes shorter than the current commute time.

The average traveling time of all commuter trains will be reduced by about nine minutes, Chang said.

The new schedule will also increase the frequency of express train services to Taichung, Kaohsiung and Hualien during weekdays, and the trains will operate at faster speeds. The traveling time of the fastest express train from Taipei to Taichung will be reduced to 97 minutes, while the fastest express trains from Taipei to Kaohsiung will take roughly four hours.
