Fixed-line thrift second only to Iran

STAFF WRITER, WITH CNA

Taiwan’s fixed telephony costs were the second-lowest in the world after those of Iran last year, a report released on Monday by the Geneva-based International Telecommunication Union (ITU) said.

The cost of fixed telephony, along with mobile telephony and Internet broadband, are factored into the index used by the ITU to measure the affordability of information and communication technology services in 150 countries. It is calculated by comparing the costs with gross national income (GNI) per capita in each country.

Hong Kong had the lowest cost of mobile telephony worldwide, while the US had the lowest Internet broadband costs.

Taiwan ranked seventh on the general index, behind Singapore, the US, Luxembourg, Denmark, Hong Kong and the UAE and ahead of Sweden, Norway and Finland. Communication services in the 10 countries range between 0.4 percent and 0.6 percent of monthly per capita GNI.

However, Taiwan went down in the index of information and communication technology development, dropping from 17th in 2002 to 25th in 2007.
