Gynecologist introduces new fibroids procedure

Taipei Medical University Hospital chief gynecologist Liu Wei-min (劉偉民) yesterday introduced a new procedure to help women give birth and have their fibroids removed at the same time.

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that grow from the muscle layers of the uterus.

“Women with fibroid problems will be able to avoid additional operations and any potential for internal bleeding. In addition, the patient has the chance to get rid of her fibroids for good,” Liu told a press conference at the hospital yesterday morning.

Also present was a patient who had recently benefited from the combination surgery.

The patient, surnamed Chen (陳), had been planning to have her fibroids removed but discovered that she was pregnant. Chen carried on with the pregnancy without performing the fibroids operation.

Then, when the baby was ready to be born, Liu performed a Cesarean section because the largest of the patient’s fibroids was obstructing her cervical canal. During the operation, Liu removed Chen’s fibroids and delivered a healthy boy.

“The magical part of this operation is that the patient will not have any problems getting pregnant and giving birth in future,” Liu said.

Chen, meanwhile, continued her follow-up exams with Liu and has just discovered that she is 25 weeks pregnant.
