Kaohsiung County officials yesterday urged people to endorse a 10-point online declaration to show their support for Taiwan¡¦s efforts to save energy and cut carbon dioxide emissions, which contribute to global warming.
Environmental Protection Bureau Director Wang Mao-sung (¤ýZªQ) and other county officials made the call at a press conference to promote the ¡§Energy-saving, Carbon-cut National Motion Web site¡¨ established by the Environmental Protection Administration in August.
The Web site (eco2.epa.gov.tw) offers statistics on energy resource consumption and guidelines for saving energy and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
Since its inauguration on Aug. 22, the declaration has been endorsed by more than 170,000 people in Taiwan.
The 170,000 pledged to make an effort to adopt the declaration¡¦s 10 recommended actions.
The recommendations include: Turning lights off when they are not in use, using power-saving light bulbs, purchasing environmentally friendly products, buying electrical or hybrid vehicles, walking or riding a bicycle as often as possible, not driving a car at least one day a week, reducing consumption of meat and disposable tableware and recycling.
The Kaohsiung County Government will soon launch a series of activities in schools and local communities to promote environmental protection and it will build an air pollution evaluation system as part of efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, Wang said.
The county hopes to bring the ideas of energy saving and carbon reduction into every campus in the county, he said, adding that even people who aren¡¦t interested in saving energy can help improve the environment by making small changes to their lifestyle.
