Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen (½²^¤å) said on Saturday that the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) should resolve its internal disputes as soon as possible for the good of Taiwan.
Four of President Ma Ying-jeou (°¨^¤E) Control Yuan nominees were rejected by the legislature on Friday, which has been seen as indicative of a rift between KMT Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung (§d§B¶¯) and Ma.
By law, members of the Control Yuan ¡X the watchdog body responsible for monitoring senior public officials¡¦ integrity ¡X are nominated by the president and confirmed by the legislature.
¡§I believe the KMT has already noticed the problem,¡¨ Tsai said when asked for comment. ¡§They should achieve internal integration as soon as possible for the good of Taiwan.¡¨
It is very important for the governing party to know what role to play and how it should work with the government, she said.
¡§Only by seeking a unity within the ruling party can the KMT operate properly,¡¨ Tsai said.
Hsu Ping-chin (?i), Chen Yao-chang (³¯Ä£©÷), Yu Mei-nu (¤×¬ü¤k) and Shen Fu-hsiung (¨H´I¶¯) were the only four out of the 29 nominees to be rejected.
Many KMT lawmakers questioned Shen¡¦s qualifications to become Control Yuan vice president because he was convicted of illegally importing medicines from the US in the early 1990s when he was a physician specializing in renal disease.
Shen denied breaking the law when asked about the incident by legislators during a question-and-answer session as part of the review process.
The Control Yuan has been in a state of suspended animation since the tenure of its previous members expired on Jan. 31, 2005 as KMT legislators and their allies repeatedly refused to review former president Chen Shui-bian¡¦s (³¯¤ô«ó) list of nominees.
