    Sentence-dodger returns

Former Hsinchu County Council speaker Huang Huan-chi (¶À·Ø¦N) returned to Taiwan and was taken into custody on Tuesday after fleeing to China two years ago following his sentencing to eight years in prison on charges of corruption, judicial sources said yesterday. Following unsuccessful kidney transplant surgery in China, Huang recently informed Hsinchu County police he would be returning to Taiwan. After his arrival, Huang was escorted away by police, who later turned him over to the Hsinchu District Prosecutors Office. Huang unsuccessfully ran as a Taiwan Solidarity Union candidate in the December 2001 legislative elections and was later convicted on corruption charges related to an incinerator scandal.

    Andy Lau ordered to pay

Hong Kong movie star Andy Lau (¼B¼wµØ) has been ordered to pay NT$5.1 million (US$170,000) to an airline for damaging its helicopter during filming, a court official said yesterday. Lau accidentally brushed against part of the chopper¡¦s steering mechanism, loaned by Daily Air, before jumping out while shooting of The Island of Greed in 1997, the official said. The move unsteadied the aircraft, causing its rotor blade to hit lighting equipment, said the official at the Shilin District Court in Taipei. Daily Air filed the suit in 1998, but the ruling was only handed down on Tuesday because the defendants were in Hong Kong, the court said. The film¡¦s producer, Wong Chung-jing (¤ý«¥¿), was also ordered to pay the airline NT$2.55 million plus an additional compensation of the same amount to be shared with Win¡¦s Entertainment Ltd, which released the film, the official said.
