The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) yesterday announced the launch of the 2008 Green Packaging Design Competition to promote the concepts of green packaging and reduce unnecessary waste in wrapping material.
The competition is also part of the administration¡¦s efforts to prevent excessive wrapping of commercial products, director general of the EPA¡¦s Solid Waste Control Ho Soong-chin (¦óµÏµ^) said.
¡§With a little creativity, packaging designers can incorporate eco-friendly ideas into their work,¡¨ she said.
The competition is subdivided into two categories: industrial and commercial designs, Ho said, adding 10 finalists would be selected from each group by a panel of judges consisting of experts from both the industry and design schools.
¡§The most important criteria that the judges will look at is ¡¥green concept,¡¦ which will account for 60 percent of a design¡¦s score ¡X that includes reducing packaging materials, using recycled products and designing end products that have a low pollution index,¡¨ Ho said.
For example, a product wrapping that utilizes biodegradable materials [like recycled paper], few printing colors and a collapsible design would be best.
Creativity would account for 30 percent of the final score, she said, and 10 percent would be based on the design¡¦s cost-effectiveness.
¡§The competition is open to the public, and we encourage everyone to pitch in their ideas,¡¨ Ho said.
