    Rebar defendants' bail fees reduced

    By Jimmy Chuang
    STAFF REPORTER
    Friday, Apr 04, 2008, Page 2

The Taipei District Court yesterday lowered the bail amounts in the Rebar Asia Pacific Group (¤OÅQ¨È¤Ó¥ø·~¶°¹Î) case. Nevertheless, at press time all of the defendants remained in custody at the Taipei Detention Center.

Liu Shou-sung (¼B¹Ø·C), a spokesman for the Taipei District Court, said judges had lowered the bail amounts because they were beyond the means of the defendants and their family members.

¡§The Wang family failed to collect enough money to bail out the defendants, so the judges decided to lower the bail amounts,¡¨ Liu said.

He was referring to the four defendants in the case. They are Frank Wang (¤ý¨Æ®i), the younger brother of fugitive founder of the Rebar Asia Pacific Group Wang You-theng (¤ý¤S´¿) and Wang You-theng's three children: China Rebar Co vice chairman Wang Lin-tai (¤ý¥O¥x), Asia Pacific Broadband Telecom Co (¨È¤Ó©Tºô¼eÀW) president Wang Lin-i (¤ý¥O¤@) and Chia Hsin Food and Synthetic Fiber Co (¹Å·s¹«~¤ÆÅÖ) chairman Wang Lin-chiao (¤ý¥O¹´).

On Feb. 4, judges set bail of NT$150 million each for the four defendants. Their relatives were unable to raise the money, however, and all four remained in custody.

The family appealed, saying the bail amount was too high, but on Feb. 15 judges upheld their previous decision.

Yesterday, the judges ruled that the bail for Wang Lin-chiao be set at NT$30 million. Bail for the other three defendants was set at NT$50 million each.

Liu said the latest bail decision was only valid until Tuesday. He added that any defendant who made bail would be barred from leaving the country and would be required to report to his or her local police station each day.

The Rebar scandal came to light in early January last year when two of the group's member companies ¡X Chia Hsin Food and Synthetic Co and China Rebar Co ¡X filed for bankruptcy restructuring with the Taipei District Court.

The move sparked a run on the Chinese Bank, another Rebar subsidiary that has since been taken over by the state-run Central Deposit Insurance Corp (¤¤¥¡¦s«O).

Wang You-theng and his wife, Wang Chin She-ying (¤ýª÷¥@^), are on the nation's most-wanted list.
